Yet Another Major Storm for Calif
2023-03-14
[MSN] The storm, which originated near Hawaii, is expected to intensify Monday into Wednesday. It will create "considerable flooding impacts below 5,000 feet elevation across much of the California Coast and Central Valley and over the southern Sierra Nevada foothills," the National Weather Service said.

.. Along the nearby Salinas River, evacuation orders and warnings remained in effect Monday for more than 10,000 people, with Monterey County officials warning of a "probable inundation of roadways between the Monterey Peninsula and the rest of the county" due to the incoming storm.
----------
Unfortunately, this upcoming storm will likely not be the end of the extra-wet storm parade. Another one is likely to hit 20-22 March. BTW, the Berkeley Snow Research site, at 8200', is already over 60" Snow Water Equivalent - I think it is 3 or so standard deviations over normal at this point.
Unexpectedly, it's winter.

the Wasatch Mtns are doing almost as well as the Sierra,

the various Mtn ranges in Colo are also above average (20% to 30%) but nowhere near the Sierra situation

#9  If only we could figure out a way to get that moisture a bit further east into the still-parched Colorado River basin (where much of California’s water reserves reside.)

#7  The local forecast for the Carson Valley immediately West of Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Crests show that CA is getting most of the water/snow. Friends up in Tahoe have 12ft now and are expecting another 1-2 ft.

"As of 6:30 a.m., the National Weather Service radar is showing the brunt of the storm stopping at the Sierra crest. There are a few bands developing in the lee of the mountains. Rain isn’t expected to arrive in Carson Valley until around 8 a.m."
