But despite the immigration to Russia from the hinterlands, Dale, ever more of Russia stands empty because of below-replacement birthrates and high death rates resulting from poor health care, high levels of Communist-era pollution, and the Russian culture’s tradition of frequent and heavy drinking. In the far southeast, the Chinese have been moving into empty villages for decades. Sadly, it was already a race to extinction between Russia and Ukraine before the war started. Ukraine may get there first, but that only means Russia will lose slightly more slowly. It does not mean Russia will have long to enjoy the win. Ditto for China, which has also reached the tipping point of losing population, much of Europe, Turkey and Iran — except for the Kurds in both countries — even Mexico now admits to a below-replacement total fertility rate of 1.73 children per woman. |
