LAPD Stops Potential Mass Casualty Shooting in Hollywood, Man in High-Rise Had Rifles Pointed Down at Park
2023-02-03
[RedState] The Los Angeles Police Department stopped a potential Las Vegas-style mass shooting Wednesday night in Hollywood as they arrested a man with a cache of weapons in his 18th floor apartment. Some of the guns were pointed down at a popular park, and the 25-year-old suspect was reportedly acting strange and making threats. (Note: some outlets are reporting that he’s 24.)

The possible attack was thwarted by security guards and neighbors at the high-rise who reported to the LAPD that a resident was possibly suffering from a mental health crisis. The man, now identified as Braxton Kyle Johnson, who one neighbor said had talked about his military background and believed the CIA was after him,
...sounds like paranoid schizophrenia blossoming — he’s at the right age for it...
was placed under arrest after police entered the apartment with a search warrant and found a sniper rifle, two high-powered rifles, a shotgun, three pistols, extensive body armor and thousands of rounds of ammo.

The LA Times reports that “one rifle with a scope was mounted on a small tripod, similar to the ones used by hunters — or military snipers.”

All the guns were unregistered.

Johnson had recently moved into the Lumina Hollywood, a luxury apartment complex in the 1500 block of Gordon Street near Sunset Boulevard, from out of town.

Johnson’s bail has been set at $500,000. It’s not his first brush with the law—early reports indicate that he has an unspecified criminal history in at least one other state.
Quite a few convicted prisoners have mental illness — it leads to poor impulse control.

#12  I hope your relative found stability and a safe harbour, Super Hose. You make a good point about finances, but if he had savings and/or family money and his schizophrenia had not blossomed before he arrived... he wasn’t there long enough to have run through his funds.

They just didn't know you yet.

You are ever gallant, my dear.

#10  I have a family member who progressed into paranoid schizophrenia at a similar age. That part makes sense. The part about someone with that diagnosis making rent in LA and assembling a high cost arsenal of black market firearms seems unlikely. Good job catching him, but the financials on this and the Uvalde shooting don’t make sense to me at this point.

#9  All sorts of things happened all over the world that day. Without at least a hint, there’s no way of knowing which one would be important enough to him to carve thedate into his flesh.

Could it be a US Army thing?

On the other hand, would it be so paranoid to think the CIA was out to get you?

Nobody outside of my personal circle had any interest in me when I was 25, Glenmore.

#5  Had a great view of the 101 freeway from what I heard on KFI. Target rich environment when the traffic gets jammed which it does almost every day. Congrats to the LAPD. The cops are not all as loony as the mayor and city council members.

#4  "...found a sniper rifle, two high-powered rifles..." mmm-thought by definition sniper rifles were high-powered. Was it a mostly powered sniper rifle?? I'm not aware of a text-book/industry/military definition of "high-powered". 300 n above??.338 Lapua? .50cal BMG?

#3  The real shock is that LAPD did something not stupid.

#2  Quite reasonable,TW. On the other hand, would it be so paranoid to think the CIA was out to get you? Or to wonder about the timing and whether it was a gun/controller’s set-up in some way?
