Qatar Just Banned The Sale Of Beer At The World Cup |
2022-11-18 |
I definitely had this one on the World Cup bingo card. [ESPN] - World Cup organisers have banned the sale of alcohol around stadiums in Qatar after last-minute showdown talks, FIFA announced on Friday. First reported by British newspaper The Times, FIFA and Qatari organisers were engaged in late negotiations over whether beer would be sold at the stadiums during the tournament, which begins on Sunday. "We don't need intoxicants! We got Islam!" FIFA said in a statement: "Following discussions between host country authorities and FIFA, a decision has been made to focus the sale of alcoholic beverages on the FIFA Fan Festival, other fan destinations and licensed venues, removing the sales points of beer from Qatar's FIFA World Cup 2022 stadium perimeters." While supporters can purchase alcohol at the (handful of) official fan zones during the competition, the sale of beer at the matches themselves has been a controversial topic. |

#5 In my day, Midshipmen were banned from bringing booze into the Army Navy game. I think this ban will probably be every bit as successful. If stiff penalties are enforced, the tournament bid will prove to have been an economic disaster for their country and much of the Arab world in general. Western partiers are not interested in the goat milk shake option at their vacation destinations. |

#4 Since the tickets have already been sold and reservations of all forms are too late to cancel (for the most part?) this seems like world class bait-and-switch. No rowdy crowds, and no serious financial loss. Virtue proclaimed and refunds denied! |

#3 US Soccer bringing the Queer to Qatar; shout it from the rooftops! Except, being ball-less meterball and western simps, they are leaving the Rainbow Dash uniforms at home. |

#2 Given the historical behavior of ‘football’ fans this may not be a bad idea regardless of religious issues. |
