Russian officials on defensive after letter alleging 'incomprehensible' losses in Ukraine
2022-11-08
[NBC News] Russian officials on Monday denied allegations that an elite marine unit had suffered catastrophic losses during an "incomprehensible" assault in eastern Ukraine.
It's not officially true until the Russians deny it.

Officials responded to what pro-Russian military bloggers and Telegram channels said was an unsigned open letter from members of the 155th marine brigade of Russia’s Pacific Fleet.
The 155th was previously mauled fighting near Kiev. Estimated casualties were 600 killed and another 600 wounded. Brigade ~3,000.
"They don’t care about anything other than to show off themselves. They call people meat," said the scathing and unusual letter, which was addressed to Oleg Kozhemyako, the governor of Primorsky Krai, a Russian region in the country’s far east where the unit is based.

The attack on the town of Pavlovka in eastern Ukraine, near the Ukraine-Russian border and south of the city of Luhansk, left 300 Russians dead, wounded or missing, according to the letter, which has not been independently verified by NBC News, although Kozhemyako responded to the claims.

"We have contacted the commanders," he wrote. "Yes, there are losses. There are heavy battles going on. But the losses are not as big as they say in this appeal."

Russia’s Ministry of Defense, issuing an unusual denial to a specific complaint from its servicemen, said in response to the letter that the division had not suffered "significant losses."
Tis but a scratch when compared to the earlier 1,200 losses.
The letter and the responses to it are the latest signs of unrest among Russian soldiers as President Vladimir Putin’s forces fail to take and hold cities as morale plummets. An ongoing Ukrainian counteroffensive has recaptured towns and threatens to take the key city of Kherson.

The letter alleged that the unit was ordered to take Pavlovka, but instead, half the unit’s equipment was destroyed over four days.

Chief of the General Staff Gen. Valery Gerasimov and Lt. Gen. Rustam Muradov, commander of Russia’s eastern military district, were guilty of "hiding" the true number of losses, it added.

#15  The surviving soldiers (marines?) of the brigade that wrote the appeal know the casualties better than a politician in the far east.

In addition, there was another brigade (40th) that supported the main assault and got thrown back. They will also have casualties. I assume the 40th Brigade made the diversionary assault when the main assault got cut up. Those casualties are not counted in the 155th Brigade's losses. Question: Is the Russian naval Infantry still trying to assault Pavlivka? Doesn't look like an important place on the map.
Russian telegram author who previously spoke about losses at Pavlivka, put another update saying he believes the losses are far higher than reported by MoD, mentioning large tank losses.

#14  Institute of Study of War had to fire one of their authors during the Syria Affair [reporting on Assad's use of force] when that Author was quoted by McCain and J.Kerry during Congressional Hearings, when later that report came out to be false.

The regional governor, Kozhemyako [pro russian], said he had sent materials to the military prosecutor's office for further examination.

"In conditions of information warfare, any publications on social networks need checking. I am sure that in any case the situation will be analysed and the competent authorities will give their assessment," he said.

#12  Petrochemical industry in the US is good too. Before we could only make a few things from natural gas, but with the cheap access to it from fracking in the US, American companies have come up with all sorts of plastics and chemicals that weren't made from it before. It is now a lot cheaper to make them than from oil and we are seeing a boom in those industries.

#10  DV nails it. Buy the dip on Exxon and watch it close. Both are at or near their 'highs' but I suspect they're headed further North (at least until Brandon is out of the WH).

#9  Invest in whatever you want. Natural gas and oil would be good as the green tech materials are mostly pulled out of Russia and processed in China, and that chain is going the way of the dodo.

But I would look at history over the past few decades to see how the new congress acts. Maybe a little more oversight, but the goods and money will flow regardless.

#3  from Inst for study of War - on this subject:
----

The Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) issued a rare statement on November 7 in response to extensive Russian milblogger outcry on November 6 about reported extensive losses and poor command within the 155th Naval Infantry Brigade of the Pacific Fleet. Russian milbloggers published and circulated a letter that claimed Russian military leadership “threw” the brigade into an “incomprehensible offensive” near Pavlivka, Donetsk Oblast, where it suffered losses amounting to over 300 killed, wounded, and missing and lost half of its equipment, all within four days.
