#4 Ellen looks stoned. For a lot of these old studio photos (in the days before 'flash'), the subjects had to be still for up to a minute or more for the exposure as the film was so slow. Flash powder (made of a metallic fuel and an oxidizer like chlorate) was available, but rarely used indoors, for obvious reasons. Smiles are hard to hold steady for that long, so the photographers usually had their subjects look aside with a relaxed facial expression. Some folk's natural expression is to look bored, angry or 'stoned'. |
