#14  What are they gonna use it for, other than as a target?

Clearing AP mines.

#13  From a General Staff perspective it sort of makes sense. Put 'em out front, and a round that gets fired at at T34 doesn't get fired at the T72's coming behind. Kinda like penal battalions.
You know they'd do it.

#12  Or as a self-propelled, armored Porta-Potty with a 3 inch gun. Park it in an out-of-the-way place and you have a quiet, protected place to take a dump.

Training vehicle for Combined Arms. Beats a truck with "Tankski" painted on it and frees a more modern vehicle for use at the front.

Maybe put it out on the lawn at the VFW? They make dandy garden art.

#9  Mike.
Yeah. Hackett in his "August 1985 The Third World War" mentioned the mobile foxhole use of old tanks. And hull down isn't bad either.

#3  ...On the other hand, if you're one of the poor dumb gopniks who are being marched into this meatgrinder, even eighty-year-old obsolete armor is better than no armor at all. The Soviets apparently never believed that we scrapped obsolete tanks, and fully expected to see Pershings, Pattons, and Conquerors well into the 70s.

Mike

PS - we were told in the 80s that the Soviets had maintained warehouses worth of "ran when they parked it" T-34s not necessarily as mobile armor but as really heavy duty portable foxholes...that also provided a surprising amount of protection against CBW and Nuclear. A civilian bulldozer could dig one of these things into the terrain in about an hour, and you're going to have a hard time digging them out.

#1  What are they gonna use it for, other than as a target? Even the T-34/85 was obsolete by the Korean War.
