#4  Consult the Wind Roses - Charts and Tabular Data from an airport near you to see what the prevailing winds are like. Remember that if all the winter winds blow from the Northwest and the Summer winds gust from the Southwest then knowing that the average wind is 'from the West' is meaningless...
