Russia Pilots Don't Know Where Battlelines Are: Get Shot Down
2022-09-20
[Newsweek] The UK's Intelligence Agency has said the Russian Air Force is taking greater risks in its war on Ukraine and has suffered losses because of it.

The Ministry of Defence provided an update on the situation in Ukraine on Monday, September 19 and explained its findings on Twitter.

The intelligence body also highlighted the air force's desire for greater risk may be a consequence of Ukraine pushing back against Russian forces on the ground.

"Russia has highly likely lost at least four combat jets in Ukraine within the last 10 days, taking its attrition to approximately 55 since the start of the invasion," the post read.

"Russian pilots situational awareness is often poor; there is a realistic possibility that some aircraft have strayed over enemy territory and into denser air defense zones as the front lines have moved rapidly.

"Russia's continued lack of air superiority remains one of the most important factors underpinning the fragility of its operational design in Ukraine."

#8  Situational awareness only works if you know where your guys end and their guys start. If the frontline is rapidly moving that may be a bit of a challenge.

#7  These cycles happen remember why the US instituted the Top Gun and Red Flag programs? Sometimes the old training can be bad training.

#6  I think the baseline you're looking for is "14 years ago during the War in South Ossetia". Might not be much but they probably don't get as much practice in actual combat as the USAF.

#5  Vastly improved from what baseline?

#4  Russian air force ground interdiction operations are vastly improved from 14 years ago during the War in South Ossetia.

#3  ...There's also the very strong possibility that these poor SOBs are being told to go out and hit something, and don't come back until you do.

And an aside - I wish I could see how many red-on-reds there have been, and what the availability/sortie rates are for the Russian Air Force. As an example, Cold War era USAF expected us to make a 4.0 - that is; four sorties per plane in a 24 hour period.

#2  We'll, then everything is just fine it seems. How can UK intelligence be wrong?

#1  Battlefield agility is the key. Hugging the defender is not a new strategy.
