US ambassador to Poland slammed for meeting with anti-government judges
2022-09-06
Nah, the U.S. of A. doesn't meddle.
[REMIX] Polish conservative politicians and commentators have criticized U.S. Ambassador to Poland Mark Brzezinski for his high-profile meeting with an association of judges calling for open defiance against the Polish government’s judicial reforms

U.S. Ambassador to Poland Mark Brzezinski took to Twitter to post about his meeting with members of the Association of Polish Judges (Iustitia), an association best known for criticizing the present government and participating in political demonstrations against it.

The post attracted much criticism on social media and it was taken as a demonstration of Brzezinski’s support for the opposition. There were also reminders of Brzezinski being a keynote speaker at an opposition conference Campus Polska organized by Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski.

Conservative commentator Rafał Ziemkiewicz did not hide his disapproval of the ambassador’s actions in his tweet on the meeting.

"If the U.S. ambassador does not know that the association which he backed is effectively an opposition party, than he is not suitable to be in his job. If he does know, even more so."

Ziemkiewicz went on to express his frustration with the ambassador., writing, "Can’t such a superpower like the USA find at least one sensible candidate for ambassador in our country?"

Ziemkiewicz believes that the ambassador should not meet people who question the legitimacy of the Polish legal system. He asked rhetorically whether the Polish Embassy in the U.S. met with activists arguing that the U.S. Constitution is subordinate to U.N. resolutions.

The ambassador’s meeting with pro-opposition judges was also criticized by former foreign minister and MEP Witold Waszczykowski.

"The Ambassador met with lawyers who are engaged in political actions against the Polish government. These people are not acting in defense of the rule of law. They are trying to bring down the Polish government. Ambassador, do you also want to bring down the Polish government?" posted Waszczykowski on Twitter.
