Syrian opposition leader was arrested Damascus by government forces, another killed in Daraa.
2022-08-22

Members of Syrian government forces arrested on Sunday a former leader of Syrian opposition in the Syrian capital Damascus, while another one was killed by unknown attackers in the countryside of Daraa, southwest Syria.

A local source told North Press, "The former leader of the Syrian opposition, Ghassab al-Eid, was arrested by government forces at Damascus International Airport on his return from Egypt to Syria."

Al-Eid obtained a settlement card after government forces entered Daraa Governorate in 2018, and then joined the State Security Branch of the government forces, the source added.

In July 2018, the opposition armed factions and government forces reached a ceasefire agreement mediated by Russia in the opposition-held areas in Daraa Governorate. Under the deal, those opposition turbans who agreed to hand over their heavy weapons were handed a settlement card and allowed to stay in Daraa, while those opposed the agreement would go to Idlib, which is under the control of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, formerly al-Nusra, before that it was called something else

(HTS).

The source said that the leader left the country for Egypt with the aim of going to Europe. "He tried to leave Egypt several times, but did not succeed, and then he decided to return to Syria."

another source told North Press that "Tayseer al-Nizami, a former leader of the Syrian opposition, was rubbed out by unidentified button men in the town of Tasil, west of Daraa."

"He obtained the settlement card in 2018 and did not join the ranks of any military formation affiliated with the government forces," the source added.

The source noted that "one of al-Nizami’s sons, Ra’fat al-Nizami, was assassinated by unknown button men at the end of 2020."

After the 2018 settlement, dozens of opposition leaders joined the ranks of the government forces, as many of them wanted to "protect themselves from being arrested," concluded the source.

Since the government forces re-captured Daraa in line with 2018 agreement, the governorate has been living in a state of security chaos, with one or two daily liquidations targeting soldiers and officers of the government forces, civilians and former opposition members, not to mention the spread of thefts.
