Strike on Voznesensk: Russian missile could have been fired at South Ukraine NPP
2022-08-20
[UKRINFORM] Russian forces have struck the city of Voznesensk, located near the South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant (NPP). Fragments of a missile were found in the observation area of the station, so it is not ruled out that the missile could have been fired at the South Ukraine NPP.

According to the investigation, on August 20, 2022, at 11:30, military personnel of the aggressor country, disregarding the norms of international humanitarian law, launched a missile attack on the city of Voznesensk. An enemy rocket hit a five-story residential building, damaging two entrances to the building, as well as nearby private houses and vehicles. According to preliminary information, 12 people were injured, including three children.

It added that in March, the attempt to seize the NPP was unsuccessful: the Ukrainian Armed Forces stopped the invaders. Then it was near Voznesensk that SBU officers detained three Russian soldiers who were hiding in abandoned buildings. All of them were part of a group that planned to seize the station.

#4  Let's take a quick look at Durak.

Discomfitting, yes,
But much nicer, I guess,
Than beginning with missile attack!

Actually, being Russian movie, is more like several punches, but still...

#3  the strike wasn't in the city. It hit an apartment block in a rural area.

Looking at google earth, the city is rather spread out with quite a bit of greenery. It would be interesting to know exactly what was hit.

imagine missile fragments don't travel more than a few hundred meters.

Not the fragments from the impact/detonation. Fragments from an intercepted missile. Ideally, the interception happens at altitude some distance away from the target, but you still get chunks of both the incoming and the interceptor.

#2  Actual buildings in the city were hit,
If you look at the photos, the strike wasn't in the city. It hit an apartment block in a rural area. Don't know distance from the NPP, but imagine missile fragments don't travel more than a few hundred meters.

but I am curious what was going on in the buildings that were destroyed.

Life. Families trying to make it through another day.

#1  it is not ruled out that the missile could have been fired at the South Ukraine NPP.

A mostly-true statement. However, a quick peek on Google Earth shows the power plant to be roughly 18 miles from the city. The Rus might have missed badly. However...

Actual buildings in the city were hit, missile fragments were found at the power plant. That suggests the city was the target and fragments of intercepted missiles fell on the power plant. It could be the other way around, but I am curious what was going on in the buildings that were destroyed.

tl;dr: I call shenanigans on the headline.
