The battle of Donbas could prove decisive in Ukraine war
2022-06-14
[NYPOST] Day after day, Russia is pounding the Donbas region of Ukraine with relentless artillery and air raids, making slow but steady progress to seize the industrial heartland of its neighbor.

With the conflict now in its fourth month, it’s a high-stakes campaign that could dictate the course of the entire war.

If Russia prevails in the battle of Donbas, it will mean that Ukraine loses not only land but perhaps the bulk of its most capable military forces, opening the way for Moscow to grab more territory and dictate its terms to Kyiv. A Russian failure could lay the grounds for a Ukrainian counteroffensive — and possibly lead to political upheaval for the Kremlin.

Following botched early attempts in the invasion to capture Kyiv and the second-largest city of Kharkiv without proper planning and coordination, Russia turned its attention to the Donbas, a region of mines and factories where Moscow-backed separatists have been fighting Ukrainian forces since 2014.

Learning from its earlier missteps, Russia is treading more carefully there, relying on longer-range bombardments to soften Ukrainian defenses.

It seems to be working: The better-equipped Russian forces have made gains in both the Luhansk and Donetsk regions that make up the Donbas, controlling over 95% of the former and about half of the latter.

#5  ^Never happen. The numbers game and propaganda will win nothing. The end can only be delivered with a clear and decisive victor. Any political posturing compromise will only destabilize the entire region.Perhaps this is the desired outcome by the powers that be waiting to take the reins of power or just destabilize the entire region. Same idea once offered concerning the Arab world. I recall Donald Rumsfeld presented. No slight intended. A brilliant thinker. I harbor no ill will towards him.

#4  In three and a half months Russia has taken about 90% of Luhansk and 50% of Donetsk.

The cost has been horrible for Russia. Tens of Thousands of their best soldiers killed. More than 50% of their top of line tanks out of action. Their military reputation has been destroyed.

Ukraine has lost tens of thousands of their best men also but their military reputation is up.

A messy, unpopular cease fire is needed followed by a messy unpopular negotiated truce followed by a messy unpopular interim settlement.

#2  "Could."

A Martian spaceship "could" land in Ukraine and vaporize both the Russian and Ukrainian armies.

I'll wait till it's over to see what happened.

#1  "relying on longer-range bombardments to soften Ukrainian defenses." Exactly. I believed this approach was best all along. Ukraine will use their drones perhaps bio weapons. I see this war is over now. Just a slow grind. I see Volodymyr relocating to Western nation in the middle of the night when he is unable to broker a financial deal for himself. This has been his personal show. He will live on for many years in various western medias. Perhaps speechify at Harvard.
