| from Militaryland and Understandingwar; source link to former Continued Ukraine efforts to erode Russia positions in north near Kharkiv but little actual change in territory. Russia apparently discontinued its offensive NE of Slovyansk and started a new offensive NW of Slovyansk. Perhaps this was because Ukraine moved troops in to defend against the former. The new offensive area is actually riskier for Russia as the logistic chain is longer and more exposed but there may be strategy behind it that is not readily discernible. Russia also advanced by some 5 km south of Slovyansk near Velyka Novosilka but met Ukraine resistance and stopped. Russia is moving to require the use of Russian currency in areas they hold in the south so this may be added to their Donbass war aims. Ukraine forces still hold on to part of Mariupol, although Russia declared victory back on April 21. Both sides are bombarding the other. Ukraine apparently hit another Russian command post near Izyum yesterday. |
