‘Entitled’ millennial generation ‘never had to sacrifice’: BlackRock exec
2022-04-01
[NYPost] Inflation and high gas prices are forcing a generation of “entitled” younger Americans to learn the pain of not being able to buy things at the store, the head of asset management giant BlackRock said.

“For the first time, this generation is going to go into a store and not be able to get what they want,” BlackRock President Rob Kapito told a conference in Austin, Texas, on Tuesday.

“And we have a very entitled generation that has never had to sacrifice.”

#9  I had parents, aunts, uncles and their contemporaries who were children of the Great Depression. They spoke of growing up in a time of great privation, but they also remember not only surviving it but being better people for having made it through that.

#8  I was born in 1961. This is the first time I can recall store shelves being consistently empty, except in Buffalo, NY during the Blizzard of 1977 and when Cincinnatians panic buy milk and bread before serious storm warnings. (I love living here, but people panic needlessly — and have no idea how to drive when there’s snow on the roads).

At university and the first years of our marriage we had to spend very carefully, because we both paid for our own schooling, and then we were saving up to pay for our wedding and to buy a house. But there was plenty of stuff to buy.

If he is talking about the Millennials, they’ve had the Dot Com bust, 9/11, the 2008 recession, the Covid lockdown... all with limited opportunity for jobs. Amazon thrives because this generation needs to get more for their money. — and with Amazon Prime they don’t even have to pay for books and movies.

#6  The point being what exactly is everybody supposed to be sacrificing for?

You don't eat that second potato today, so that you have a potato to eat tomorrow.

#5  I had always thought that sacrifice implied a further cause. The gods, a decent harvest, victory, whatever. The point being what exactly is everybody supposed to be sacrificing for? Perhaps it goes back to that whole, entire 'nobody said THIS would be fun' concept.
