Mark Mellman: US and independent Russian pollsters find strong support by Russians for Putin's war

#16  Navalny's the biggest Russian chauvinist of them all!
Navalny was a major supporter of the Crimean annexation

You say you want a revolution? Well, you know... we all want to change the world LOL

If you replace Putin with a liberal, you're likely to get a hardcore Great Russian Nationalist (like Kerensky).

But you will NEVER find a Russian leader, no matter how progressive or pro-Western, who supports the idea of unilateral Russian disarmament in the face of a hostile and aggressive, encroaching Nato. Won't happen.

#15  Thanks for this. What about Navalny? We always hear his name as the leader of the opposition to Putin

#14  About 20-25% of the Russians are what westerners would call liberals or progressives living mainly in Moscow and St Petersburg; they're fairly solidly against Putin. They're like the SPD in Germany or Labour in the U.K., or the hard core of the Democrats in the US: Bernie Sanders or Ocasio-Cortez types, or maybe your typical left-lib Disney executive.

The rest of the population ranges from suspicious of the West to downright hostile. Some are religious, others not, but all of them think the western "woke" movement is batshit crazy. They want nothing to do with the freakishness and cultural self-hatred you see on full display across New York, Berlin, Paris, London. These people -- they're the majority -- are enraged by the West's hypocrisy in supporting American invasions, botched wars and meddling in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria. And the US coup in Kiev is esoecially infuriating to them.

#13  There's a lot more to it than any of those snapshots.
It's called nationalism. Americans support their leader in times of grave danger and uncertainty, so do Cubans, so do Ukrainians, so do Russians. Shouldn't be a surprise that another nation sees Biden as an shithead and a hypocrite after the buffoons Obama and Bush Jr

#12  "I am totally not a Russian Troll. I love Putin and support him"*

#11  Russians rally around Putin... believe that “everyone is against us” and that “Putin defends us, otherwise we would be eaten alive.”

What else did we expect?

So the American president declares economic war on Russia, gives billions of dollars worth of weapons to Ukraine, announces he's going to overthrow the Russian government like the Americans have overthrown dozens of governments around the world. And we expect a great nation to just collapse and whimper like pathetic little Libya or Iraq?

Did we think the Russians don't have legitimate fears or feelings of national pride?

The degree of misunderstanding and hubris on display is simply amazing

#10  Bush's approval rating was 90% just after 9/11. It went down from there.

Castro used to win his elections by 99% to 1%.

Biden won the most votes of any candidate for president ever in 2020*

There's a lot more to it than any of those snapshots.

The same applies in Putin's case.

#9  Russians rally around Putin as his approval ratings soar
THE NEW YORK TIMES
March 31, 2022, 8:17 a.m. ET
Ivan Nechepurenko <- that's a Ukrainian reporter

President Vladimir V. Putin’s approval ratings have reached levels unseen in years, according to an independent poll released on Thursday, as many Russians rally around the flag in the face of mounting international pressure.

Eighty-three percent of Russians said they approved of Mr. Putin’s actions, up from 69 percent in January, according to a poll by the Levada Center, an independent pollster in Moscow. Ratings of many other government institutions, as well as the governing party, have also gone up, the poll indicated.

The poll by Levada — which has been declared a “foreign agent” in Russia — was conducted among more than 1,600 people across the country, with the margin of error not exceeding 3.4 percentage points.

Denis Volkov, Levada’s director, said that initial feelings of “shock and confusion” that many Russians felt at the start of the Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine was being replaced with the belief that Russia is besieged and that its people must rally around their leader.

The confrontation with the West has consolidated people,” Mr. Volkov said, adding that some respondents said that while they generally did not support Mr. Putin, now was the time to do so. According to that line of thinking, he said, people believe that “everyone is against us” and that “Putin defends us, otherwise we would be eaten alive.”

#7  Xi is not popular. His position is shaky. Putin is very popular and has no real challenger to is rule

#6  I'm sure pollsters will find Xi strongly supported by the Chinese people.

#5  ^ Clarification: Not the Crimean War of 1853 but the Crimean annexation (what Russians call the accession of Crimea to the Russian Federation) in 2008. Was and still is enormously popular, a source of great national pride and rejoicing in Russia

A reportaah without borders
following the board's orders,
slicked his hair with spit and
called auntie Babushka on her phone.

He inquired a lot about Putin,
and fascists and regimes and lootin'.
But all he got was a slavic rant
on the prices of methadone.

#3  The notion that Russians oppose Putin is a deep state fantasy. The Russians overwhelmingly support this war. They've been waiting for 30 years for a chance to finally fight back against their serial humiliations by the West. The Crimean and Georgian wars were hugely popular too.

#2  Let's see: You're a random Russian and some unknown somebody asks you (in person or via phone) whether you support Putin's war on Ukraine? What are you gonna say?

#1  Not surprising when all the media only tells you what a wonderful guy he is. Worked with Obama too.
