More on the Russian anti-aircraft countermeasures
2022-03-16
[MSN] Russia has deployed a mystery munition in Ukraine that's stumped ballistic experts.

The munitions are decoys meant to trick air-defense radars and heat-seeking missiles, the New York Times reported, and are released from Iskander-M short-range ballistic missiles. They are each about a foot long and shaped like a dart with an orange tail, American intelligence officials say.

The devices produce radio signals to confuse enemy radars attempting to locate the missiles, and they also contain a heat source to attract other missiles.

#14  Right over me head, as usual, but that was beautiful. "All gone... like farts in a rain of darts. Time to die."

#9  more random guessing:
The flares for planes and helos are a different breed than these.
Maybe the missile decoys were already pre-loaded for use.

#8  Cede to the experts, perhaps clearing or testing a flight path? Try to get Ukraine to leave their radars on a bit too much? An automated Wild Weasel of sorts?

#7  Russia is getting its helicopters and planes shot down regularly so this orange tail dart hasn't helped that much for that aspect.

As for the missiles, I didn't think Ukraine could effectively down ballistic missiles even without the orange tail dart.

#6  It's just a more sophisticated form of chaff or decoys. Maybe very sophisticated.

#2  "How did the corrupt and inept US defense establishment let Russia leapfrog the US with HGV's, S-550, etc? That's the origin of the Ukraine crisis. This should be a Sputnik moment. Instead it's an orgy of virtue signaling. Imperial senility."

#1  ...The importance of us getting our hands on these things CAN NOT be understated.

This would be the equivalent of turning the Soviets loose with one of the old PERSHING II missiles, letting them take all the penetration aids out, then taking them back to the Rodina for study. They may well have handed us the keys to their SRBM/IRBM kingdom.
