| Fred is under the weather at the moment, as in way under the weather. I don't really know how serious this is; I was not given a lot of information, and I didn't ask/pry. The remaining moderators will continue to keep the 'Burg going as best as can be done, and it will be in fits and starts such as we are now. The Good News is that we have been working on a backup project on my own server, a mirror as it were, of the 'Burg on my own server. I have been backing it up to a live site since last March, but it is only read only at the moment. I have to slash my way through Fred's code (IOW learn) to get it to adapt to a FreeBSD operating system. I ask of the regulars here to pray for Fred's recovery and report any errant guests/regulars to the o-club. I will handle them best I can from there. |

| #26 Get better soon Fred. As for a backup - it really is as good as the DR exercise used to validate it. Did one on a subversion server awhile back and was embarrassed by the number of holes I found. Its too late finding a problem or missing file during the rebuild / recovery. |

| #20 There are several people here way further up the IT totem pole than me, but I would point out a backup is only as good as the first proof of goodness via a disaster recovery drill. Using rsync, the working theory is that if there's no file, there's nothing to update, so the backups are intact. That's the plan. |

I have no idea what badanov has in place, but hopefully a proof that the backup will work for outside users will be totally unnecessary in the bigger scheme of things. | #18 The impetus for badanov’s back-up a year ago was when Rantburg went down for weeks while Fred was hospitalized with Covid, leaving Gloria to try to deal with that on top of everything else. For information: badanov also hosts a back-up O Club for when Rantburg is down: http://oclub.1dogstar.net/cgi-bin/bb.pl. It’s bare bones, so I keep in in my Favourites, to keep the shakes at bay during extended outages of the main site. |
