U.S. needs to go ‘scorched earth' to deter attack on Taiwan by China, military paper warns
2021-12-06
[Just The News] Analysts urge strategy to credibly threaten to "render Taiwan not just unattractive if ever seized by force, but positively costly to maintain" by destroying its semiconductor industry.

The U.S. military no longer scares Beijing to the degree it once did, so other deterrents must be used, analysts said.

The United States might lose a war against China over Taiwan, and therefore should adopt a "scorched-Earth" plan for Taiwan to destroy its own industries if Beijing attacks, according to analysts writing in a U.S. Army publication.

The recommendations appear in the winter issue of Parameters, a quarterly publication from the U.S. Army War College.

Coauthors Jared McKinney and Peter Harris note that the U.S. military no longer scares Beijing to the degree that it once did.

BLUF:

The best way to forestall a Chinese assault on Taiwan is not via military threats, but by persuading Beijing that an attack would backfire, McKinney and Harris noted.

"The United States and Taiwan should lay plans for a targeted scorched-earth strategy that would render Taiwan not just unattractive if ever seized by force, but positively costly to maintain," the authors wrote. "This could be done most effectively by threatening to destroy facilities belonging to the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, the most important chipmaker in the world and China's most important supplier."

China also should be warned of potential domestic unrest.

#17  Welp, if Taiwan wants, we could donate large quantities of radioactive waste to them so they can turn it into Fallout: Taiwan

#14  The French coined a better word...chevauchée

Could be ceviche, where everything is chopped up.

#13  No need. The semiconductor industrial supply train is world wide. The plants will come to a halt w/o supplies from US, Europe and Japan.

That said, if the US defends Taiwan, the ChiComs will be bombed as soon they walk into those plants. Collateral damage.

#12   and us deciding to throw the environmental protesters out the window and build our own plants.

Given that three of the big chip makers are building new factories or expanding current ones in the U.S., it looks like the our own piece is already underway.

Maybe the earth we need to scorch is far to the east of Taiwan?

#7  As the credibility of US deterrence rapidly declines, and the specter of a kinetic invasion looms ever larger in the visible media, the appeal of compromise and lucre will make a soft-invasion most likely in the next 6 months perhaps...with all the face-saving blathering possible to assuage the patriots and nay-sayers. Perhaps even a "compromise" brokered by Bidet to put a US face on the surrender/victory. But make no mistake, in the domestic Middle Kingdom press, it ill be a massive victory and confirmation of their world power supremacy in their eyes!

Yes, the evidence is compelling.

#5  The scorched earth conceit is retarded. The Chinese are obsessed with reclaiming Taiwan and have been for more than half a century -- Kissinger said that was all they wanted to talk about back in 1971. Has f-all to do with whether Taiwan even has a tech industry.

That this is even discussed is still more evidence that We Are Ruled By Morons

#4  Scorched earth means you destroy your own territory, so your enemy can't use it.

The French coined a better word, that deals with destroying your enemy's territory, so your enemy can't use it: chevauchée

Also most commonly associated with the phrase fire and sword.

The example in the article (Sweden) is more in line with the traditional concept of scorched earth, where you make the cost of invading territory you own too high.

In the concept being discussed, the US would turn its power on an ally as a strategic deterrence.

The very idea wouldn't give the Chinese pause, but could give them cause to dismiss the seriousness of the US's commitment to defend Taiwan

The Taiwanese may already be considering that, according to a couple of other articles I've seen. The Chinese also have to consider the possibility that losing Taiwan - a US ally in one form or another since the late 1930s - could result in a thorough wipeout of whatever party was in power here when it happens, and us deciding to throw the environmental protesters out the window and build our own plants.

I still believe that the PRC has no desire to rule over the blasted rubble that would be Taiwan after any invasion, no matter how well planned, so they will do everything in their power to walk in quietly.

#2  More likely scenario:

China has secretly signed agreement that will ensure Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing end-users receive substantially reduced 'post conflict' pricing and free delivery.
