Bob Dole, Former Republican Presidential Candidate, Dies at 98
2021-12-05
[EpochTimes] Bob Dole, a former Republican U.S. Senator from Kansas and GOP presidential candidate, has died at age 98, his family confirmed in a statement on Sunday.

“Senator Robert Joseph Dole died early this morning in his sleep. At his death, at age 98, he had served the United States of America faithfully for 79 years,” said his family in a statement via the Elizabeth Dole Foundation.

Earlier this year, it was announced that Dole was being treated for advanced lung cancer.

For 30 years, Dole was a senator for Kansas, and in 1976, he was President Gerald Ford’s vice presidential nominee. The pair was defeated by then-Democrat candidate Jimmy Carter and his running mate, Walter Mondale.

Dole, who was injured while fighting in World War II, was the Senate majority leader from 1985 to 1987 and later, from 1995 to 1996. In 1996, Dole clinched the Republican nomination for the presidency but was ultimately defeated by incumbent President Bill Clinton, a Democrat.

Writing in his memoir, “One Soldier’s Story,” Dole said that his experiences in World War II defined his life.

Drew Hammill, a spokesman for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), confirmed that the speaker had ordered the flags at the Capitol to be flown at half-staff following Dole’s passing.

Dole is survived by his wife, former Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-N.C.), and his daughter, Robin Dole.

#7  Heard him speak (without TV cameras) at a group setting in '98. Great speaker when off the cuff, and a really good story teller.

Shook his good hand and thanked him afterwards. It was truly an honor.

#6  Also: after their time was up, they didn't hang around D.C. grasping for power and subverting their successor, as Barry and his entourage have done for nearly five years now / since January 2017

#5  Most politicians of that era were better by far than the lying conniving, self-aggrandizing weasels who make up out current moronic elite.

Even that era's lefties like McGovern served honorably. Carter, Mondale, Ford, Dole: for all their flaws, none of them used his office to line his pockets like Bathhouse Barry or Gore or the Clintons have, or the Bidens have done and continue to do.

#1  Dole searched for his radio operator to call for reinforcements. The man was slumped over in his own blood, radio in hand. Dole crawled over to him to pull him to a shell hole.

And that’s when it happened.

“I felt a sting, as something hot, something terribly powerful crashed into my upper back behind my right shoulder,” Dole wrote.

It could have been a mortar round, an exploding shell or machine gun fire. Whatever it was, it tore through his shoulder and spine, instantly paralyzing him from the neck down. His body twisted in the air, and he landed face down in the dirt.

Soon, one of his men pulled him behind a wall before being ordered to keep going. A sergeant dragged him another 60 yards to relative safety. Dole was drifting in and out of consciousness and remembered only excruciating pain and bleeding profusely.

He was given a dose of morphine, and the sergeant wrote an “M” on his forehead with Dole’s own blood to signify as much when the medics showed up.

They waited for more than six hours. Two medics who had been sent to retrieve him were themselves killed. Dole lay flat on the ground in the rain, thinking about Kansas.

Eventually, Dole was carried down the mountain on a stretcher and transported to a military hospital.
