CVS, Walgreens, and Walmart perpetuated opioid crisis, Ohio jury finds
2021-11-25
[Washington Examiner] Walgreens, CVS, and Walmart perpetuated the opioid crisis in two Ohio counties, a federal jury in Cleveland found Tuesday.

The decision against the trio of major corporations marks the first time the retail arm of the pharmaceutical industry has been held liable in the long-standing epidemic of opioid overdoses and fatalities.

"For decades, pharmacy chains have watched as the pills flowing out of their doors cause harm and failed to take action as required by law," the lawyers for the two counties, along with attorneys for local governments across the country, said in a statement after the verdict.

"The judgment today against Walmart, Walgreens, and CVS represents the overdue reckoning for their complicity in creating a public nuisance," the statement read.

#10  Isn't the DEA supposed to monitor prescriptions? It would be easy to put all prescriptions into a database and then run a program to alert somebody when the number of opioid prescriptions written by one doctor for one patient exceeds a certain threshold. If they weren't doing it they should be fired for gross incompetence and negligence. But this lawsuit, instead of targeting the criminal doctors and law enforcement types, goes for the soft targets with the deep pockets.

#9  There's a running joke in William S. Burroughs' book Junkie where some drug addicts try to pass a forged prescription at a mom n pop drug store and the crusty old pharmacist spots it and says "You can take your business to Walgreens..."

#8  I gather the doctors who actually wrote the prescriptions were few and not rich enough to provide the deep pockets.

#7  The "users" were taking medication prescribed by a doctor. Let's not shit on the little people, shall we? That's what Democrats do.

#5  Because of course they wrote all those Rx's... and the users had no personal responsibility.

#2  Then this little gem; "The Biden Administration will require all truck drivers who cross US borders to be fully vaccinated.

The mandate will go into effect on January 22 and will pertain to all essential travelers."

Major shipping logjam self inflicted.
