| #2 A favoured crossing point for ISIS between its Iraqi and Syrian sectors, and presumably before that was one of thespots along the border where the remnants of the Saddam Hussein’s Baathists crossed over from their safe havens in Syria to attack Coalition targets in Iraq after 2003. |

| #1 Abu Kamal or Al-Bukamal is a city on the Euphrates river in the Deir ez-Zor Governorate of eastern Syria almost on the border with Iraq. It is the administrative centre of the Abu Kamal District and the local subdistrict. It should have been cleaned out long ago, and the Iranian presence only adds to its misery. |
