  • Maj Gen Christopher Donahue, 52, was the last soldier to leave Afghanistan

  • He flew out on the final flight at 3:29pm Washington time on Tuesday, or one minute before midnight in Kabul

  • Donahue is the commander of the 82nd Airborne Division, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina

  • His division is the nation's Immediate Response Force, and they are positioned to deploy anywhere in the world within 18 hours of notification

  • Donahue has deployed 17 times in support of operations in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Libya, and Eastern Europe

  • He served in the special forces before studying at Harvard and working in the Pentagon as special assistant to the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff

  • Donahue, a two star general, deployed to Afghanistan in mid August and was given the job of maintaining security at the airport

#3  The photo op moment is just too damn depressing, it was the absolutely correct thing to do, even for a mess like our exit, but to use it as a vanity moment, planned for publicity, beggars so much of an impressive career.
