Pegasus scandal: Are we all becoming unknowing spies?
2021-07-21
[BBC] The allegations that spy software known as Pegasus may have been used to carry out surveillance on journalists, activists - and even perhaps political leaders - highlights that surveillance is now for sale.

The company behind the tool, NSO Group, has denied the allegations and says its customers are carefully assessed.

But it is another sign that high-end spy techniques, which used to be the exclusive preserve of a few states, are now spreading more widely and challenging the way we think about privacy and security in an online world.

In the not-too-distant past, if a security service wanted to find out what you were up to, it took a fair degree of effort. They might get a warrant to wiretap your phone. Or plant a bug in your house. Or send a surveillance team to follow you.

Finding out who your contacts were and how you lived your life would take patience and time.

#3  Cash, real paper currency, is increasingly being seen as an inconvenience, especially by younger retail clerks...yet it makes one far less visible so we use it for everything we do in person.
For bills its paper checks and the mail. Credit cards only as a form of payment when we have to get something not locally available.

#2  In the famous words of one we all know, Aww "come on man". Currently it is wide spread and quite invasive. Next step is your chip card. All your discretionary spending will be monitored and controlled. Donuts, no you have diabetes, travel no you owe taxes or child support. On and on.

#1  Awww come on, every time you use these 'consumer' products, you are being tracked. Outside the usual governments, the 'business' people have been doing it for decades. It's just the 'usual' suspects of governments now has spread to nearly all of them. We're in a zero trust culture now cause those who do it never pay a price outside the going market value of what they collect.
