2021-07-08
[AlAhram] The organisation also hailed Egypt’s effort to achieve self-sufficiency in producing coronavirus vaccines so that it can become a hub for exporting doses to Africa.
China’s going to have a much harder time disrupting the world with its next pandemic.

#4  I would have meant to mean saline if I weren’t falling asleep at the time...

Mr. Wife managed to teach his Egyptian team to make First World laundry detergent, though it took eight months of on-site supervision with the occasional break to come home and regain the weight lost to alternating food poisoning and dysentery — it was his first 3rd World country, and the learning curve was steep. But we were still married at the end of it, and other than losing the same twenty pounds repeatedly, he came away loving the country, so win-win.

#3  ^something statistically as effective as distilled water

You mean saline (distilled water = osmotic shock)

And I'm not sure it's harmless CoronaVac is an inactivated vaccine. It uses a dead version of the SARS-CoV-2 virus so that it cannot replicate

If the virus in the vaccine is NOT properly inactivated (Chinese, let alone Egyptian, quality control) ...

#2  Good catch, g(r)omgoru. Still, it’s practice for making something that actually works in the future, and probably something statistically as effective as distilled water isn’t likely to do much harm if done imperfectly. When Mr. Wife started up his company’s factory near Cairo, they first had to clean the empty pipes of mummified gerbils, and the workers were persuaded to wear their company-issued safety shoes when they heard that walking barefoot through the raw materials would cause sterility. It wouldn’t, of course, but in these modern times one can’t have factory workers trotting around barefoot.
