India deploys another 50,000 troops to its disputed border with China - as tensions between the nuclear-armed sides remain high after deadly mountain battle |
2021-06-29 |
![]() The two sides clashed in a high-mountain battle last year that left more than 20 soldiers dead in the bloodiest days since the Sino-Indian War of 1962. Over the last three months, India has dispatched soldiers and fighter jets to the border, bringing its total up to 200,000 troops, an increase of 40 per cent on last year, sources told Bloomberg. It is not clear what numbers China has but it has bolstered its infrastructure across the tundra with runways, bomb-proof bunkers for fighter jets, howitzers and outposts. Beijing has also sent long-range artillery, tanks, anti-aircraft missiles and fighter jet squadrons over the last few months, Bloomberg reported. |

#5 but as soon as something shows up that wasn't in the briefing 'Unexpected' is our middle name, Mike. |

#4 50,000. That's a non-trivial raise. Wonder how much is in the pot so far. |

#3 I'd hope that somebody on our side was having some quiet exchanges of data over tea with India, but I'm not confident. The "exchange of data" was likely with the Chinese. |

#1 ...One thing that I'm seeing - but not sure how accurate it is - is that the Chinese are competent enough as long as things go according to plan, but as soon as something shows up that wasn't in the briefing, they're on the back foot and stay there. I'd hope that somebody on our side was having some quiet exchanges of data over tea with India, but I'm not confident. Mike |
