UK faces 100,000 cases EVERY DAY by July as Indian Covid variant drives up infections by more than a third over last week to 7,738 and Boris Johnson is warned by ministers lockdown rules will remain until next spring
2021-06-13
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news]
  • The PM all-but confirmed Freedom Day would be pushed back from June 20 to July 19 on Saturday

  • Cases continued to rise by more than a third over last week to 7,738 - second-highest daily figure since Feb.

  • Independent SAGE's Anthony Costello, of University College London, said the true daily infection figure was likely more than double the 8,000 recorded in tests

  • He said: 'In a month you'll be up to 100,000 new cases a day. If the Government takes a gamble and lets rip like Tory backbenchers want, the NHS will be overloaded. Let's wait. Let's stay as we are'

  • Tory ministers have warned Mr Johnson that a delay will leave a 'very short window to open up,' with further push-backs leading to a full reopening only next spring - after winter pressures on the NHS cease

#4  Chris, that's a fine question.

I think part of the answer is that our ruling elite is too stupid to imagine a solution other than what they've always done. You can see that here: The Democrat solution to any problem in 1965 was to tax more and spend more. The Democrat solution to any problem in 2021 is the same.

Another part of the answer is that the people making the decisions don't have skin in the game. In the UK a shutdown crushes small businesses, but the government officials who imposed the shutdown never miss a paycheck. So, instead of another UK lockdown, how about Parliament passes a law that no senior member of Her Majesty's Government gets paid a farthing until they solve the bloody problem? I bet you'd see some innovative solutions pretty quickly.

#3  why continue the lockdown for another year when evidently your over year long lockdown has not worked?

#1  Current daily infections are well below 10k and fatalities per day are fewer than 10.

About 60% of population is fully vaccinated (another 15% or so have had one dose) and probably another 10% are immune from having had a non symptom or minimal symptom infection.

Remember the Neil Ferguson (Imperial College of London) estimate that the UK would have 2M fatalities (official total covid deaths to date are about 130k). This guy is still employed by the College and probably still getting awards.
