  • The Makran vessel, which is a converted oil tanker that can carry three million gallons of fuel, is one of two Iranian warships currently in the Atlantic Ocean

  • There are fears the two warships - the Makran and Sahand - are carrying weapons and are possibly en route to Venezuela

  • The Makran appears loaded with millions of gallons of fuel, experts say

  • Despite fears the warships are carrying weapons as well as oil, US authorities are unable to stop them because of sovereign immunity

  • Ships that are government-owned or operated are granted immunity under the UN Convention and cannot be subject to the jurisdiction of any country

  • The two warships - Makran and Sahand - that are currently in the Atlantic are operated by the Iran navy

  • Intelligence already has indicated that the Makran is carrying Iranian fast-attack craft and has a mobile launch platform for helicopters

  • US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin raised fears on Thursday that the vessels could possibly be carrying weapons

  • Biden administration official said the US views delivery of weapons in its hemisphere as a threat and that it will take 'appropriate measures' to prevent it
