According to state media, the Kharg caught fire at about 2:25 AM in the Gulf of Oman. The vessel had to be evacuated. | |

| #6 ....Consider this - Kharg was able to refuel two ships at a time and VERTREP a third. Makran - their 'floating base' currently underway out-of-theater and likely headed for Venezuela - could underway refuel one (albeit with a field expedient refueling rig) and VERTREP another. Between the two, that's a pretty respectable capability. Except that Kharg is on the bottom and Makran is a looooooooooong way from home. So until Makran gets back, the Iranian navy is tied to its ports; they have no strategic mobility in their own home waters whatsoever. And if anything happens to the Makran.... Mike |
