" mortar attack in the northern province of Faryab on Wednesday evening, local police officials said on Thursday.
The incident occurred in Qaisar district.
Along with the civilians reportedly killed and injured, "two security force members were also maimed," said Abdul Karim Youresh, a front man for the provincial police chief.
"The Taliban wanted to target the security force members in the attack but mostly non-combatants were killed and maimed," he said.
The Taliban has not commented on the attack.
