| Frozen and counterfeit dollars in Syria's Raqqa |

| [NPASYRIA] 30-year-old Muhammad (a pseudonym) looked nervous during his usual work hours in an Autonomous Administration institution in the city of Raqqa, north Syria. Muhammad made a phone call, speaking words that seemed like riddles, then placed his phone on the table and lit a cigarette. He sighed, and then said, "Oh, no. I have been a victim of fake dollars." For years, the city of Raqqa has been witnessing an increasing number of cases of counterfeiting and promotion of counterfeit currency, and traders and residents in the city have fallen victim to the counterfeit dollar, which has caused many to lose their money in light of the sharp collapse in the value of the Syrian pound. |
