An overloaded boat crashed into a reef and broke apart off the coast of Point Loma
The boat, described as a 40-foot cabin cruiser, was spotted off the coast of Point Loma a short time before 10 a.m. near the Cabrillo National Monument, officials said. Lifeguards and other first responders helped victims who jumped into the water from the boat, five of whom were in "CPR status," meaning they were having trouble breathing, said Jose Ysea, a spokesman with the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. Three people died and 27 others who suffered what Ysea described as "varying degrees of injuries" were taken to local hospitals. | |

#2 Of course, the skipper might have been trying to make his way through all those big waves, high winds and reefs so his, um, passengers could go ashore. In which case he is a fool as well as a criminal. Go ahead, skipper, embrace the power of and. |

#1 “Conditions were pretty rough — 5 to 6 feet of surf, windy, cold, the water is around 60 degrees,” San Diego lifeguard Lt. Rick Romero said. Yep. Also sounds like the motor quit, otherwise you wouldn't want to be drifting out of control with all the big waves and reefs at the tip of Point Loma. It's not a good place to be out of control. I'm guessing the boat was stolen because that's been known to happen in Mexico which is yet another good reason not to go there. But if the skipper owned the boat he lost his legitimacy when he tried to smuggle people into our country and so he deserves to lose the boat as well. |
