First US case of more infectious ‘double mutant' covid variant that emerged in India is identified in California

  • Researchers at Stanford University confirmed what is believed to be the first U.S. case of a coronavirus variant that emerged in India

  • Indian authorities have referred to it as a 'double mutant' because it has two mutations on parts of the virus that help it hook onto our cells

  • The variant was linked to between 15% and 20% of samples sequenced from India's Maharashtra state, which has seen a 50% spike in cases in the last week

  • Health experts believe the variant spreads more rapidly, but there is no evidence to suggest that it evades vaccines antibodies more easily
Given that about 105 million Americans have gotten at least their first shot of the vaccine (thank you President Trump!), 24 million are known to have recovered from the illness (including a number of Rantburgers), and there are heading toward 7 million known active cases at the moment, this new double variant is going to struggle to get a foothold.
