Heavily-armed members of far-right militia Boogaloo Bois march on Michigan police station calling for release of man who 'shot at SWAT team' during 36-hour stand-off
2021-04-06
It is not clear to me how it got to the point that police surrounded the house — elderly parents dealing with PTSD they aren’t equipped to understand, elderly parents abusing a unsuccessful son who at 32 is still living at home, paranoid man who collected guns and finally scared his parents into calling the police for help — and neither the Daily Mail nor the internet has clarified the situation for me. Certainly the Boogaloo Bois are not being helpful, since nobody challenged Mr. Shafie’s rights as he acquired his collection, and in the current situation more is at stake than his right to have them.
[DailyMail, where American gets its news]
  • Omar Shafie,
...a decidedly Arab name, though it doesn’t look like that is the issue here. A search of the internet suggests his full name is Omar Saad Shafie of Livonia, Michigan, a very Arab suburb of Detroit, and Ann Arbor, which is not...
32, was arrested after he barricaded himself into his parent's home and allegedly fired several rounds at SWAT team

  • In a jailhouse recording posted to social media by his girlfriend, Shafie claimed his Second Amendment rights had been infringed by police

  • On Sunday, heavily-armed Boogaloo Bois marched on Ann Arbor police station calling for Shafie's release

  • Members of the Boogaloo Bois have been linked to two murders in California in 2020, and the attempted kidnapping of Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer

The incident that sparked the protest began in the early hours of March 24 when Shafie's parents called police to say their son was suffering from a mental health crisis and had assaulted them at their home in Superior Township, Michigan.

Around 50 members of the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office including a SWAT team, crisis negotiators and sheriff's deputies responded to the rural address.

Sheriff's deputies brought the parents to safety, but Shafie refused to leave the house.

He was armed with multiple weapons, was wearing a flak jacket and had rounds of ammunition strapped to his body, according to a local news report.

Several shots were fired by Shafie during the encounter, which lasted well into the following day.

Since his arrest, Shafie's girlfriend has disputed that he was suffering from a mental health crisis, and that police had infringed on his Second Amendment rights.
Jeremiah Harding’s website popped up when I searched Mr. Shafie’s name. He lays out the girlfriend’s claims about the police and Shafie’s feud with his parents here, with links to her Facebook posts. The girlfriend, who has a Facebook page under CylieJean Yacura though her real name was reported in one of the Daily Mail’s sources as Cylie Johnston, also has a #FreeOmar Facebook page here. Ms Cylie claims Omar is a veteran, but does not explain why Omar and his parents have been feuding.

#5  I can't begin to imagine where you'd be if you had an updated suite of analytic systems fusion and collection management tools.

Indeed! Pity someone can't get us a demo copy of Palantir or such to play with.

Must go ponder open-source network analysis tools...

#4  *blush* I’m too much of a dilettante, Besoeker, with an ever more porous memory. Most of what I “know” comes from first searching Rantburg, then searching the internet, which why I am seriously grateful Fred wrote that cute little 3-article Rantburg search app. Note that mostly I quote accumulated learnings or have next level questions that I hope more knowledgeable Rantburgers will discuss while I watch in delight for future quoting, not answers. Bottom line, I am a team project, for which all here are responsible.
