Personally,

I went the Chilean 1895 7x57 Mauser and had it re-barreled 30/06.

Being made in 1895 it does not (did not) require a FFL background check due its being classified an antique weapon.

Original Cost at Augusta Cherokee Pawn $40 in 1969.
2020-21 cost up $1,500 depending of grade and etc..

Plus it is the very weapon I am told the 1903 Springfield 30/06 was copied from and which was used as a US ARMY rifle for many years later. Even used as a US Army sniper rifle for many years.

I understand Mauser was even paid royalties until WWI started.

BTW: The flip up 1500m iron Mauser sight has brought down a hand full of Mule Deer in the Starkville MS. area and a few Large Boar in Southern GA.

#1  I'm afraid that if I allowed an M-1 carried by a WW2 Marine or paratrooper to see America in 2021, it would fix its own bayonet and charge the nearest politician.
