The view from Egypt. [AlAhram] A new power equilibrium is steadily emerging throughout the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East. ...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. #1 It is rarely recalled that the collapse of the Bulgarian army opened a new front on Germany in WWI. The Turks seeing the handwriting on the wall were the first to sue for an armistice and jettison their German allies. A month later Germany capitulated and WWI ended. The result: From that day to this neighboring nations know by experience that Turkey is not to be trusted, and that an alliance with Ankara is a sometime thing. Unfortunately, Washington has never learned that lesson. |
