Will Politicians Take Away the Ballot Initiative? |
2021-02-22 |
Citizen lawmaking is under attack as never before — from both Democrats and Republicans. More and more state legislatures have made it harder for voters to place initiatives on the ballot in the 26 states that allow for some form of the process. Republicans are upset that progressives have used initiatives to legalize marijuana and raise the minimum wage. Democrats are troubled that their attempts to impose taxes and regulations in progressive states such as Oregon, California, and Washington state are often thwarted by voter referendums. So it’s no surprise that legislatures in more than 20 states are debating bills to make it more difficult for citizens to employ ballot measures to change public policy. |

#5 From a history book on "Direct (Athenian) Democracy" the ancient Greeks came to the conclusions that for polities with over 3,000 voters that It. Just. Doesn't. Work. Any damnfool thing gets voted on in the "heat of the moment" and there are just too many citizens to poll on each and every thing... Still, when you have an corrupt entrenched majority party run state government (*Hint* California) it does seem worth the confusion that it causes. |

#4 Whenever I hear someone nowadays using the term "democracy" I figure they are either (1) lying (2) profoundly ignorant of the historic meaning of the term (3) engaged in misdirection / redirection of the entire discussion or (4) some combination of 1,2 and 3. |

#3 So remember kids, anytime you hear a politician talking about "protecting our democracy..." An actual democracy would be a plebecite on every single issue. And boy would the pols be unpleasantly surprised how that might turn out without vote "adjustment" shenanigans. |

#1 It's a non-trivial challenge, but new Dominion algorithms will soon be able to deal with individual ballot measures. Should Dominion algorithms be overwhelmed, our team of dedicated vote counters are standing by to remedy any shortfalls. |
