12 December
[BenarNews] Indonesian police arrested the suspected military commander of the al-Qaeda-linked Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) network who has been on the run for 18 years, authorities said Saturday.

National police front man Argo Yuwono said Aris Sumarsono (alias Zulkarnaen) was arrested by Indonesia’s counter-terrorism police squad Detachment 88 (Densus 88) on Thursday in East Lampung regency on Sumatra Island.

#4  Is that the same camp where the kiddies get their summer training, the one whose graduation exercises include dive rolls through flaming hoops?

#3  A long story:In November 1988 a large gathering of Islamists met in the USA at the Oklahoma City Convention Center. Sponsored by the Muslim Arab Youth Association (MAYA) for Palestine, the featured speaker was Sheikh Abdallah Azzam the noted Afghan-Arab who made his home in Peshawar (and assassinated by Zawahiri). Azzam was working to finish the task of creating an Islamist Afghanistan, but after that he informed the gathering he would return to the struggle for Palestine, his homeland. Azzam then saw to it that MAYA served as a HAMAS front. Devoted to the extirpation of Israel, HAMAS had only recently been organized in Gaza. Its leader wanted to play the Islamist game, and in Gaza it could outdo the Popular Front/Liberation of Palestine which was secular and Marxist. By 1990 Hamas had a training camp near Khan Yunis for Muj from everywhere. Its forte was bogus paper (passports, counterfeit bills, etc.) and explosives.

#2  You are ever a fount of information, b. But what’s this about Gaza training camps? I had thought those were purely for domestic use. What did I miss?

#1  Zulkarnaen is not the first generation Jihadist.
Bin Laden used Muhammad Jamal Khalifa, his peripatetic brother-in-law, money-man, and former Afghan-Arab as liaison with nascent Philippine and Indonesia Islamists. In the Philippines Khalifa provided financing to Abdulrajak Janjalani and to the Abu Sayyaf movement. Working from Manila, Khalifa moved Southeast Asian Islamists to and through training camps in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Lebanon, Gaza and Sudan. In Southeast Asia itself, the Abu Sayyaf supported the Islamic Defenders Front in Indonesia and helped finance Yemeni Sheikh Muqbil bin Hadi's activity in Indonesia's Moluccas in that emerging Muslim-Christian conflict. Thus insurgency in Indonesia has been ongoing for 30 years.
