Hundreds march in Ohio capital over police shooting of Black man
2020-12-12
[Jpost] The shooting is the latest in a spate of killings of African Americans by police in the United States.

Hundreds of protesters rallied on Friday evening in downtown Columbus, Ohio, demanding justice and transparency from investigations into the killing last week of a young Black man shot by a sheriff's deputy outside his home.

The crowd, shown in footage broadcast by local news outlets and on social media, marched downtown toward the Ohio statehouse chanting, "No justice, no peace, no racist police."

Some participants in the march, followed closely by coppers on foot and in patrol cars, spilled into the streets, blocking traffic, but the gathering appeared peaceful and there were no reports of arrests.

The protest unfolded a week to the day after Casey Christopher Goodson, 23, was shot to death by a Franklin County sheriff's deputy assigned to a group of US marshals searching for a runaway in the Northland neighborhood where Goodson lived.

According to authorities, the officer said he had seen Goodson carrying a gun and opened fire on him when Goodson ignored the deputy's order to drop the weapon.

Goodson's family said he had been returning from a local sandwich shop and was shot in the back as he was about to enter his home. They said he had a permit to carry a concealed weapon.

A coroner's report said Goodson was shot multiple times in the torso.

"I'm calling for justice and that's all I'm calling for," Goodson's mother, Tamala Payne, said in a news conference Thursday. "My son was a peaceful man and I want his legacy to continue in peace."

Lawyers for the deputy, identified as Jason Meade, said Goodson had pointed a gun at him before the shooting, CBS News and other media reported.

The shooting is the latest in a spate of killings of African Americans by police in the United States that have triggered a wave of protests over racial injustice and brutality by law enforcement.

The Columbus Division of Police is investigating the shooting, along with the FBI, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Ohio, and the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice.

Tom Quinlan, chief of police in Columbus, has promised an "independent, meticulous unbiased investigation."

Another protest was planned for downtown Columbus on Saturday at noon, according to the Columbus Dispatch and other local media.

#13  My mother regards cooking as a duty rather than a pleasure, Besoeker. When I was a child, she used to open a can of Manischewitz potato latke mix, slicing the things directly into the pan. (Manischewitz no longer sells this option, for good reason.) I had no idea there was anything better until I was exposed to homemade ones when the trailing daughters were young, at which point I started looking at recipes. This is the recipe I finally settled on:

Chef Harry Rubenstein’s Hanukkah Latkes
5-6 large Russet potatoes, peeled (5 lb.)
~2 cups neutral oil (canola, grapeseed – NOT olive)
2 medium onions, peeled
3 large eggs
1/4 cup breadcrumbs, matzah meal, flour (can be gluten free), or potato starch
2 tsp baking powder
Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste
Topping of your choice (applesauce, sour cream, etc.)

Line a large sieve with cheesecloth or kitchen towel; place sieve over a large mixing bowl, then set near grating station. Next to the stove, cover a layer of newspaper with paper towels. Set more newspaper and paper towels near at hand for additional layers.

Using a box grater or food processor, grate together potatoes and onions, alternating to mix shreds. Add grated potato mixture to sieve, then sprinkle with salt to encourage fluid release, stirring to distribute. When all the potatoes and onions have been grated, pull up cheesecloth/kitchen towel to squeeze moisture out of potatoes. Let starch settle out, about 5 minutes, then pour off liquid, leaving the potato starch at the bottom of the bowl. Stir in bread crumbs and baking powder. Whisk eggs to combine, then mix into the potato starch mixture. Finally, stir in the grated potatoes.

Set a large frying pan over medium-high heat, then pour in oil to ¼” depth. Heat until oil is shimmering, about 360F degrees on a candy/deep-fat thermometer. Stir potato mixture, then dip out a scant ¼ cup (50 ml) if want large pancakes, or a heaping tablespoon (30 ml) if want small, for each latke. Do not crowd in pan. Fry latkes until golden brown on bottom before turning over, about 3 minutes per side. When golden brown on the second side, remove from pan to let drain on a thick layer of newspaper covered with paper towels. Stir potato mixture again before dipping out the next set of pancakes. Add more oil to pan as needed. When paper towels are covered with latkes, sprinkle with a pinch of salt and freshly ground pepper to taste, cover with another layer of paper towel and another section of newspaper, then another layer of paper towels on which to lay the next layer of pancakes.

If not serving immediately, let cool to room temperature. If to be served within 4 hours of making, keep covered at room temperature; otherwise, spread on cookie sheets to flash freeze, then store in freezer bags. Reheat in 375F oven until hot and crisp.

Traditional condiments are sour cream (or substitute plain Greek yoghurt) and applesauce. Apparently Ashkenazi Jews have been arguing for generations over which one is correct, but I like both.

#12  Real journalists would cover the equal number of white victims of police shootings.

Not to mention the appalling, 1000x larger number of white victims of shootings by black criminals.

#11  /\ A very intelligent women, well traveled, schooled in politics and international relations, who writes exceptionally well and can easily converse on a myriad of topics, who also cooks latkes. That Mr. Wife, a most fortunate fellow indeed.

#10   I wasn't there but I saw the local TV broadcast of the protesters. It was hardly "hundreds", maybe 100.

Good to know, Thimp Clusort2035. Thank you. I’m still recovering from turning ten pounds of potatoes into latkes during the early part of the week... and it looks like I’ll have to repeat the exercise tomorrow, as over three quarters have already been eaten. Even Mr. Wife, who claims to dislike them, has been helping himself to my freezer stash.

#9  You want to cover 'spate of killings'...? Visit Chicago.

Now.. now... You know those are not 'killings-killings'. Much like rape is not rape-rape. Ask Whoopsie...

#8  Amazing how may "gentle giants" and "peaceful men" get shot by the cops.

And does any sentient being actually believe in this current climate that the cops are going to shoot [defend themselves from] someone [black person] just willy-nilly? C'mon.

Problem is, last time they marched a black kid murdered a white college student at a frat party the following weekend.

#3  "The shooting is the latest in a spate of killings of African Americans by police in the United States."

Is it really a 'spate of killings' or is it the media doing their best to stir the pot?

#2  Stay at home orders don't apply to political protestors but do apply to religious gatherings.

State-approved speech is kosher
Religious sacraments - y'know, like weddings, funerals and baptisms - are verboten
