#1 His X-1# test piloting and Alan Shepard's "Right Stuff" were just about every early 1960's childhood heroes. These were Real Men cheating Murphy at every stage of the game. They had to have nerves (Cahonas) of Titanium just it get into a piece of equipment with a 60% to 80 % historical failure rate. To sum up his way of test piloting... "If you can walk away from a landing, it's a good landing. If you use the airplane the next day, it's an outstanding landing." |
