Biden faces politically thorny decision on Trump prosecutions
2020-11-22
[The Hill] One of the biggest tests awaiting President-elect Joe Biden after he takes office is how his Justice Department will handle calls from some Democrats to investigate and prosecute President Trump.
The hits just keep on comin'!
Trump will lose expansive legal protections after Jan. 20, and the new administration will have to decide whether to follow up on congressional and local law enforcement investigations or try to turn the page on the Trump era and avoid the political risks that could come with such an unprecedented court case.

No former president has ever been charged with a crime after leaving office, but Trump is already the subject of a number of probes. In New York, the state attorney general and the Manhattan district attorney are conducting fraud investigations into his past business practices.

And Biden will likely face pressure from some Democratic lawmakers and voters to go after Trump for what they believe has been a presidential term rife with abuses of power.

"Donald Trump along with his worst enablers must be tried for their crimes against our nation and Constitution," Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-N.J.), a veteran of the House Ways and Means Committee, said in a statement this past week. "Importantly, any further abuse of the sacred pardon power to shield criminals would itself be obstruction of justice, and any self-pardons would be illegal."

#10  Good luck with that. You have to provide actual evidence n court, not here say from an unknown ‘whistleblower’.

#9  Are they trying to incite another civil war?

#8  There is enough dirt on Hunter to be sent to prison for life. Some of those illegal acts were done in Republican jurisdictions with Republican district attorneys.

#6  Why would there be discovery? Or a trial?

Once the decision is made to criminalize opposition to the Democrats, there's no reason to obey due process. No doubt the crimes will be "too serious" to waste effort on things like discovery -- and we've already had the Do"J" hiding exculpatory evidence during a political prosecution.

Any attempt to touch Trump in anyway has to be treated as beyond the pale -- a modern crossing of the Rubicon.

#5  If they try it, that opens everything up to Trump discovery. Allowing Trump’s investigators to go through the files is the last thing they want

#4  I think the establishment deep state knows the minefield that is a Trump prosecution. They will launch investigations, sure. It will appease the rabid amongst them for a time. Drag it out a year and then end with a slap on the wrist and then sweep the whole thing under a rug.

Any real push towards a full lockup of Trump and his main supporters will move the needle full into civil war.

The real test is keeping the New York rabid idiots in check.

#3  They have no crime but that never stopped them before.

I've seen some of this in the media. They'd best not unless they want to kick off a shit storm the likes of which they have never before seen. Most likely, those lefties who are sitting cozy now will be at risk too. Not a threat, just a prediction.

#1  If they do, it will slow any other actions and guarantee a Republican majority in Congress in 2022, and a Republican backlash in state legislatures and the public which could be leveraged for election reform to prevent fraud again. And it will pave the way for a GOP president in 2024,
