The former Senator-for-Life from Delaware, an example of the kind of top-notch Washington intellect to be found in the World's Greatest Deliberative Body... suggested for him to keep Zalmay Khalilzad, the U.S peace envoy for Afghanistan in the new team in order to take advantage of his experience and contacts with both the Taliban ...the Pashtun equivalent of men... and Afghan officials, Foreign Policy reported. Biden’s top foreign-policy advisors, including Antony Blinken, Jake Sullivan, and Michèle Flournoy, are said to be open to considering a possible extension for Khalilzad but are by no means committed. "I think there are scenarios in which the new administration may seek to build on what Zal has done, and there are scenarios in which they may opt for something different," one former U.S. official said. "If there is progress over the next few months and Zal is in a good position to continue that progress, I can certainly see a scenario where they would ask him to stay for some period of time. But I don’t think anyone should expect they are indispensable in a circumstance like this." This comes as that Donald Trump ...The tack in the backside of the Democratic Party... has recently ordered the acceleration of the U.S troops’ withdrawal from Afghanistan, however, this decision has rattled NATO ...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The NATO chief, Jens Stoltenberg said in a tweet that NATO will continue its support to Afghanistan, despite the US troops reduction. "Even with the US reduction, NATO will continue to train, advise & assist the Afghan forces in their fight against international terrorism", said Stoltenberg. The earlier U.S plan was to keep 4,500 US forces in Afghanistan, but Pentagon recently announced that President Donald Trump will reduce the number of US troops from 4,500 to 2,500 before he leaves office.
