Princeton University may be forced to pay back $75m in federal funding after its president admitted racism was 'embedded' at the school

  • The DOE found concern over President Christopher Eisgruber's acknowledgement that racism remained 'embedded' at the school

  • The DOE will investigate if Princeton's claims that it adhered to Title VI mandates were false and any discriminatory practices as a result

  • Princeton could lose millions in federal funding if found responsible

  • Eisgruber penned letter this month that brought attention to initiatives implemented by Princeton to combat systematic racism

  • 'Racist assumptions from the past also remain embedded in structures of the University itself,' wrote Eisgruber

  • School officials said it was 'unfortunate' that the DOE believed 'grappling honestly with the nation’s history' indicated wrongdoing
Following the DOE's announcement, Princeton University released a statement that pushed back at the agency's accusations.

'It is unfortunate that the Department appears to believe that grappling honestly with the nation’s history and the current effects of systemic racism runs afoul of existing law,' the statement read.

#1  $75MM is petty cash for Princeton. Their endowment is $24.7B. Make all the staff sit through 3 weeks of intensive re-education on actual racism and censorship. Now that would be a punishment for them.
