Why WWII Navy Veterans Added Salt to Their Coffee
2020-08-26
[Military.com] There are actually two reasons "old salts" have been known to do this (and it’s not why they’re called old salts).

#10  Ketchup liberally poured on hash browns or scrambled eggs kills the grease -- wisdom imparted by an Army veteran.

#8  Automated coffee makers add bitterness to coffee as the grounds in the middle keep getting hit with hot water and that leaches out bitterness.

I use the Aeropress and it doesn't add bitterness as all the grounds are exposed to heat and pressure for a short time. No salt needed with that.

#7  Can also line the coffee filter with cleaned egg shells or 1/4 teaspoon baking soda per pot. The reacted baking soda will also add salt to the coffee.

#6  WHO guidelines for daily salt intake are way too low. Salt it up!

#5  However, making a full 30 cup batch using sea water from the deep sink nearby doesn't provide the same experience. So I was informed as a young airman by my first shop Chief, Virgil Crank. And that explananation was not delivered with a lot of consideration for my 'feelings' or other unicorn- derived emotions....
Now JP-5 in the water is the Snipes' fault....

#4  Plus the drinking water on nuke boats has almost all minerals removed. That makes the water taste metallic and that carries over into the coffee and bug juice.

#3  I tried it and found it made the coffee smoother.

#1  I used to put a little salt in with the ground beans before making the morning coffee to remove some of the bitterness; haven't done that in quite some time now.
