WNBA, NY Liberty players leave court during national anthem |
2020-07-26 |
[NYPOST] The New York Liberty and Seattle Storm made a statement before tipping off the WNBA season on Saturday. Both teams left the court during the national anthem as a sign of peaceful protest and held a 26-second moment of silence for Breonna Taylor, the 26-year-old black woman who was killed at her home by Louisville police. Each player also had Taylor’s name on the back of their jerseys. "We are dedicating this season to Breonna Taylor, an outstanding EMT who was murdered over 130 days ago in her home," Liberty player Layshia Clarendon announced at mid-court, alongside Storm star Breanna Stewart, before the opening tip-off at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. "Breonna Taylor was dedicated and committed to uplifting everyone around here. We are also dedicating this season to ’Say Her Name" campaign, a campaign committed to saying the names and fighting for justice of black women — black women are so often forgotten in this fight for justice, who don’t have people marching in the streets for them. We will say her name. Sandra Bland. Atatiana Jefferson. Dominique Remy Fells. Breonna Taylor. We will be a voice for the voiceless." |

#15 If team management condones this behavior and the league condones it, then it's a lost cause. I'm already waiting for the NFL to start so I can not watch it. |

#12 So the next time any US team plays China in an international match, are the US players going to stand for the Chinese anthem and walk out for the Star-Spangled Banner? |

#11 /\ Good point. Rather difficult to boycott something to which few pay any attention anyway. |

#10 Well, the WNBA is kind of "judgement proof". No one pays attention already so you can't boycott them effectively. |

#7 It's difficult to imagine the WNBA getting less popular than it already is, but there it is - great job, folks! Prediction - there won't be a WNBA in two years. |

#2 The heck with sports. I tossed every sports-related shirt and paraphernalia long ago, and don't even by their crap when it's 90% off. |
