Huge Confederate monument toppled at Seattle's Lake View Cemetery
2020-07-06
[KOMONEWS] A 94-year-old stone monument to Confederate veterans of the Civil War has been toppled in Seattle's Lake View Cemetery.

The once-towering monument, known as the United Confederate Veterans Memorial, was erected by the United Daughters of the Confederacy in 1926. It is made of granite from Georgia's Stone Mountain.

It wasn't immediately known who toppled the memorial, but it has been the target of Black Lives Matter protesters since the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis sparked efforts around the country to destroy statues and monuments to Confederate leaders or causes.

Even before Floyd's murder, the monument was controversial. It has been vandalized repeatedly in recent years and a petition to have it removed was started in 2015.

In 2018, several parts of the monument were smashed, including part of its inscription, insignia, and a relief of Robert E. Lee.

Some Seattle city officials have also called for the monument to be removed, but the cemetery is privately owned and the city has no jurisdiction over it.

#1  Jefferson Davis built the early railroads around Washington and Oregon. I used to puzzle at the road names and confederacy monuments in those two states until I discovered his early work there well before the Civil War.
