With murders up nearly 80% in Chicago last month, Lori Lightfoot blames guns
2020-07-04
[WASHINGTONEXAMINER] Shootings and homicides in reliably Democrat Chicago, aka The Windy City or Mobtown
...home of Al Capone, the Chicago Black Sox, a succession of Daleys, Barak Obama, and Rahm Emmanuel...
increased sharply in June compared to the same time last year.

Police data show that shootings in Chicago increased by 75% in June of 2020 compared to June 2019, and murders in the city rose by 78%, according to NBC 5 Chicago.

In June of this year, 424 people were shot, and 89 were murdered — compared to 242 shootings and 50 murders during the same month last year.

Last weekend alone, gun violence killed more than a dozen people, including three children. Twelve people were killed on Father’s Day weekend, including a 3-year-old.

The city plans to deploy 1,200 extra officers over the Fourth of July holiday weekend, according to WGN TV.

When asked about the rise in violence, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, a Democrat, said it was a "complicated" question and suggested that gun control is the answer.

"That’s a complicated question," Lightfoot said. "We have way too many guns on the streets."

Lightfoot also suggested that the coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague)
...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men...
shutdowns that kept people inside for months played a role in creating a "perfect storm" while also pointing out the death of George Floyd as an event that sparked anger in the community.

#25  That's so weird. I would have assumed she would take ownership. The buck stops here and all that.

#24  The city and county prosecutors are simply not prosecuting anyone who is a "minority". They're busier hunting for reasons to prosecute cops and whites.

#21  Well, get the DPW in to sweep them up. Why do you leave guns on the street?

A good question and a worthy Snark of the Day.

#20  Gangs and Politicians in Chicago: An Unholy Alliance

While they typically deny it, many public officials—mostly, but not limited to, aldermen, state legislators, and elected judges—routinely seek political support from influential street gangs. Meetings like the ones Baskin organized, for instance, are hardly an anomaly. Gangs can provide a decisive advantage at election time by performing the kinds of chores patronage armies once did.

In some cases, the partnerships extend beyond the elections in troubling—and possibly criminal—ways, greased by the steady and largely secret flow of money from gang leaders to certain politicians and vice versa. The gangs funnel their largess through opaque businesses, or front companies, and through under-the-table payments. In turn, grateful politicians use their payrolls or campaign funds to hire gang members, pull strings for them to get jobs or contracts, or offer other favors (see “Gangs and Politicians: Prisoner Shuffle”).

Most alarming, both law enforcement and gang sources say, is that some politicians ignore the gangs’ criminal activities. Some go so far as to protect gangs from the police, tipping them off to impending raids or to surveillance activities—in effect, creating safe havens in their political districts. And often they chafe at backing tough measures to stem gang activities, advocating instead for superficial solutions that may garner good press but have little impact.

#17  Chicago has some of the strictest gun laws in the country. They don't enforce them. Prosecution, conviction, and incarceration for a meaningful time are rare.

It's my understanding that the Chicago politicians have an understanding with the gangs - they leave the gangs alone and the gangs turn out the vote and make donations.

#16  It's not just that Dems are running cities such as Chicago, Baltimore, New York. These are bona fide freak shows going on in broad daylight.

In his first 35 minutes at the hospital, Leyva had racked up $21,521 in charges, and by the time he was released three weeks later the bill totaled more than $157,000.

ER costs are out of control, too.

No, you have way too many violent people on the streets. Do something about the sick "progressive" culture that creates them.

#7  The problem with making guns scarce is that then the smart move a gang leader will make is to be sure his scarce guns go to his best shooters. Then instead of having 6 killed and 59 wounded on any given day, you get more like 47 killed and 18 wounded. Winning!
