Thomas Jefferson statue should be removed from NYC Council chambers, lawmakers say
2020-06-20
[NYDAILYNEWS] A statue of Thomas Jefferson should be removed from the Student City Council chambers, say Speaker Corey Johnson and the leaders of the Council’s Black, Latino and Asian Caucus.

"The statue of Thomas Jefferson in the Student City Council Chambers is inappropriate and serves as a constant reminder of the injustices that have plagued communities of color since the inception of our country. It must be removed," Johnson, Councilwoman Adrienne Adams and Councilman I. Daneek Miller wrote Mayor de Blasio on Thursday.

"Jefferson is America’s most noted slaveholder, a man who owned more than 600 Black women and men and a scholar who maintained that Blacks were inferior to whites," the letter continued. "The Student City Council Chambers is a place where we vote on bills to improve the lives of all New Yorkers and build a more fair and just city. It is not a suitable place for a statue of Thomas Jefferson. Keeping it in City Hall sends a terrible message to the people who are counting on us to work towards a more equitable New York City."

Adams and Miller are Queens Dems who co-chair the Black, Latino and Asian Caucus. Caucus members Inez Barron and Deborah Rose also signed the letter.

#5  Come, come people. Know your history. NYC was a hotbed of Tory Crown Loyalists. The only reason NY finally ratified the Constitution was to avoid being frozen out of the local economy of the new country.

You are no better than the Taliban with their blowing up of monuments and antiquities. Quit showing your stupidity. Surely, NYC has more pressing issues that are being ignored.

#1  The Founders weren't perfect. They were a product of their times. To judge someone's actions by the standards of today is merely claiming that you are somehow morally superior.
