#1 A French action caused the death of Abdelmalek Droukdel. As head of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), the Algerian was in charge of all affiliates in north Africa and also commanded al-Qaeda's Sahel affiliate, Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM). In addition the French announced that the Islamic State group commander Mohamed Mrabat, a veteran jihadist holding a senior role in the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS), was caught on 19 May. |
