| German FM in Israel warns against West Bank annexation plans |

| [YNews] - Germany's foreign minister met with his Israeli counterpart Gabi Ashkenazi in Jerusalem on Wednesday to convey Europe's stiff opposition to Israel's plans to begin annexing parts of the West Bank. "Many people in Israel - and also in the European Union - are preoccupied with the current developments in the Middle East peace process and the possible annexation plans," Maas said prior to his departure. "Germany remains committed to the goal of a negotiated two-state solution. We will also talk about this and I will underline that we are ready to support all initiatives to revive talks between Israelis and Palestinians." Israel annexing, US military are leaving, Coronavirus is not abating --- it's a bad time for Herrenvolk. |

| #40 Saw a menu once in German and in English while in Germany once. "Beilagen" (sides or side dishes) was translated as "Enclosures". It happens but can be worth a chuckle from time to time. |

| #37 I thoroughly enjoyed learning German — both times. The drawback of relearning it a lifetime later is that one is never quite sure if one is remembering or making it up... So when we went back to visit fifteen years after that, it turned out that aufschlafen was not quite the separable verb I was aiming for. We were meeting German cousins for the first time, and the impression I did not intend to make was of my 65-year old cousin absolutely helpless with giggles, and her thoroughly adult son-cum-business partner red-faced because giggles are not at all manly. (For the record, ausschlafen is what I meant, not nearly as interesting.) |

Examples: Breznsoiza (somebody who puts salt on pretzels, which are, of course, already salted) Kniabisla (somebody who pisses on his knees) Noagalzutzla (somebody who finishes off the remaining beer of others) |

| #11 English can be surprisingly hard to translate, exactly because of its idioms. Getting to first base (with a girl) simply doesn't work in German (the translation, that is). |
